Specialty recycling and composting

Did you know that on the Oakland campus, you can drop off compost and recycle specific items like batteries, styrofoam, pipette tip boxes, ink cartridges, textiles, and medications? Check out the interactive map here to find the drop off locations closest to you:

Soft plastic recycling

As part of a pilot program with Pitt Sustainability, we have started recycling soft plastics in BST and BST3. We recommend setting up a small collection bin within your office/lab and then bringing it to one of the main collection bins as needed. There are a handful of locations you can drop them off at:

  • In BST3: near the freight elevator on floor 2 (accessible to anyone with access to BST3).

  • In BST: in the internal hallways near E1402 and E1501.

*Add soft plastic recycling flyer*

The drop off bins are not in main areas so that they are not confused with regular trash cans or contaminated with non-recyclable waste. As a result, you may have a hard time finding the drop off locations. Here is a helpful guide for finding them:

BST3: Take the freight elevator to the 2nd floor (loading dock). The bin will be to your right as soon as you exit the elevator.

*Add photo of recycling location*

BST 14th floor: Exit the elevator bay and turn right. Then turn left and go through the double doors into the internal hallway. Walk down the hallway and the bin will be to your left.

BST 15th floor: Exit the elevator bay and turn right. Then turn left and go through the double doors into the internal hallway. The bin will be visible on your right as soon as you enter the hallway, next to a DLAR garbing shelf.
