Happy Headspace!

The BGSA Community Outreach and Mental Health Committees warmly invite you to join us for a special Happy Headspace session dedicated to community service and support. As part of our effort to spread encouragement and kindness this spring, we will be preparing Easter baskets for patients at the Hillman Cancer Center. Together, we will assemble baskets containing bracelets, candies, and small care items to bring comfort and a sense of celebration to patients during the Easter season.

Be a Judge at the Mars Elementary School Fair

The BGSA Community Outreach Committee is looking for VOLUNTEER JUDGES for the Mars Elementary Spring 2026 Science Fair on WEDNESDAY, March 11 from 6-8pm.

Judges will evaluate elementary school student science fair projects with a primary goal of encouraging the talents and efforts of all students to promote intellectual curiosity and scientific exploration of their interests. This is a great opportunity to promote and foster an interest in science to young students and be a role model as a professional scientist!

Food and drinks will be provided for judges during the fair and transportation will be organized via carpooling. The BGSA Mental Health Liaison is bringing back Happy Headspace on Friday, February 28, 2026, from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM at the Graduate Student Lounge.

This month’s Happy Headspace will be a community meet-up focused on creating a welcoming space where we can connect with one another, share our experiences, and support each other’s mental well-being. Whether you’re feeling stressed, looking for new coping strategies, or simply hoping to meet new people, this is a relaxed space to be heard, supported, and connected.

Join us as we come together to build stronger connections within our community and support one another through open conversation and shared experiences. Your presence matters, and we would love to see you there.

Make a community dinner at Family House!

The BGSA COC will be making a community dinner for patients and their families staying at Family House (next to Shadyside Hospital/Hillman Cancer Center) on SUNDAY, DEC 7.  We will start around 3 PM and plan to serve dinner at 6 PM.  This is a fun event where participants get to showcase their cooking skills and interact with the patient community in Pittsburgh!

Following the guided tour, participants will have full access to the rest of the museum for the remainder of the day—so you can continue exploring exhibits at your own pace and enjoy all the museum has to offer.

The BGSA Community Outreach Committee and Greater Hazelwood Neighborhood Commitment at Pitt are collaborating to bring a new student-driven lecture series to Hazel Grove Brewing this fall: Sip of Science. This series will provide graduate students with the opportunity to engage with residents of the Hazelwood neighborhood and communicate what scientists do and how their research contributes to improving human health in a concise, informal talk tailored for a non-scientific audience. The second talk will be given by Nathan Schneider next Thursday (October 16) at 6 pm at Hazel Grove Brewing. Hope to see you there!

Custom Candle Making

Please join us on Saturday, Sept 27th at 1 pm at the Southside Mix Candle Co. (2746 Sidney St) for a candle-pouring party! The first 16 people to sign up on Eventbrite (SOLD OUT) get a guaranteed slot and their candle paid for, but more folks are always welcome to join!

You can expect to be in the store for 30-45 minutes making your candles. After you are finished pouring candles, Mix Candle Co. will kindly ask you to explore the neighborhood for a bite to eat or drink while the candles cool down (~2 hours), allowing other guests to pour candles.

 Please visit their website for parking information, restaurant suggestions, and more. The store is BYOB, so you're welcome to bring your own wine or beer to enjoy while you create candles. However, food of any kind is not allowed. They provide cups and bottle openers for your convenience. They do ask that you limit your drinks to 2 per person.

Join us for a movie night in the Pitt C4C: Understory, located in the basement level of the Cathedral of Learning (CL B50). We will be screening the film "Past Lives" (2024), directed by Celine Song. The critically acclaimed film follows two childhood friends who are torn apart after one of them emigrates from South Korea, only to meet 24 years later, reunited for one fateful week. Join the BGSA and the co-founders of Solutions Makers, Dr. Sara Farwell and Dr. Maciej Zatonski, for an interactive, brain-first workshop designed to help you prevent burnout from ever derailing your future, happening on September 9, 2025 (Tuesday), at 3785 Scaife Auditorium Room (in-person event)

As graduate students, we often end up feeling drained, anxious, and stuck in cycles of procrastination or overthinking, rather than graduating with focus, motivation, and resilience. The BGSA feels this is a must-needed workshop for all of us. You will walk away with a clear plan to manage your mental well-being, new tools and techniques to improve your recovery and emotional resilience, and evidence-based methods to sustain your performance for the duration of your career.
